On November 4, 2018, the Chinese naval vessel Luyang came within 40 meters of a collision with the USS Decatur during one of it's freedom of navigation patrols within the South China Sea. What began initially as a stern warning almost escalated into an international incident of global proportions. Now that hostilities, while not direct and still in their initial stages seem potentially inevitable, Washing D.C. officials have begun to take a hardline stance when it comes to the other countries in the South China Sea. The message seems clear enough.
